Fort Myers City Council Approves New Downtown Beautification Project
FORT MYERS, FL – April 15, 2026 – The Fort Myers City Council voted unanimously last night to approve a new downtown beautification project aimed at enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the city's historic core. The initiative, which will focus on the area around First Street and Hendry Street in the River District, includes new landscaping, improved pedestrian lighting, and the installation of several public art pieces.
The project, estimated to cost $1.2 million, will be funded through a combination of city reserves and a state grant secured earlier this year. Construction is slated to begin in late summer, with an expected completion date in early 2027. City Manager Marty Johnson stated during the council meeting that the goal is to create a more inviting and vibrant atmosphere for both residents and visitors, encouraging more foot traffic and supporting local businesses.
Specific plans include the planting of native flora along sidewalks, upgrading existing streetlights to more energy-efficient LED models, and commissioning local artists for the public art installations. The city plans to hold community workshops in May to gather input on the art pieces and specific landscaping designs. Details on these workshops will be announced next week on the city's official website.
This project follows several smaller improvements made to Centennial Park last year and is part of a broader downtown revitalization strategy. Residents interested in learning more or participating in the upcoming workshops are encouraged to visit the Fort Myers City Hall or check the city's public notices.
