Fort Lauderdale Police Shooting: What We Know So Far
Fort Lauderdale police have released body camera footage showing an officer-involved shooting that killed a 23-year-old man who was carrying an airsoft gun, according to police.
The weapon was later determined to be an air-powered replica firearm with no colored markings or other clear indication that it was not a real gun, according to Fort Lauderdale police.
In a separate Fort Lauderdale officer-involved shooting reported by NBC Miami, Damian Orozco, 49, was shot by an off-duty Fort Lauderdale police lieutenant at Yacht Haven Park & Marina Resort and later died at the hospital.
Police said the off-duty lieutenant fired after a property manager alerted him to a man causing a disturbance on the property, and Fort Lauderdale police said the officer was placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is leading the investigation in the RV-park shooting, according to NBC Miami.
Dispatch records show 74 similar officer-involved shooting incidents in Fort Lauderdale over the past six months.
The scale of the response indicates an active police investigation rather than a broader emergency, and no confirmed road closures, evacuations or traffic impacts were found in the available reports.
What happens next will likely depend on further statements from Fort Lauderdale police and FDLE as the investigation continues.
Day.News will continue to update this story as officials release more information.
