Fort Lauderdale Officer-Involved Shooting: What We Know So Far
A Fort Lauderdale police officer-involved shooting near Northwest 9th Avenue left an adult male dead after he was taken to Broward Health Medical Center, according to CBS News Miami coverage of police statements.
Police Chief Bill Schultz said officers provided life-saving efforts until Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue arrived and transported the man to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to CBS News Miami.
Schultz also said the man was not the subject of the initial disturbance call that brought officers to the area, and that the details of that original call were still unclear, according to CBS News Miami. Fort Lauderdale police said the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting, with the Police Department conducting an internal review as well.
Officials said the involved officers will be placed on paid administrative leave pending that review, which Schultz described as department policy, according to CBS News Miami. Available reporting does not confirm the man’s identity, whether any officers were injured, or whether there were evacuations or road closures tied to the incident.
The response included Fort Lauderdale police and fire rescue units, and the transfer to Broward Health Medical Center indicates a high-priority medical response after the shooting.
Dispatch records show 70 similar officer-involved shooting incidents in Fort Lauderdale over the past six months.
The investigation remains active, with FDLE leading the case and Fort Lauderdale police expected to release more information as it becomes available.
Day.News will continue to update this story as officials release more information.
