Fort Lauderdale Officer-Involved Shooting: What We Know So Far
Fort Lauderdale police have released body camera video from an officer-involved shooting that ended with the death of a 23-year-old man, and officials said the weapon later found at the scene was an air-powered replica firearm. This is what we know so far.
According to Fort Lauderdale Police, the man was carrying what was later determined to be an airsoft gun, and the replica did not have the colored markings typically used to identify it as not a real firearm. Police also said the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting as standard practice.
In a separate Fort Lauderdale case, police said off-duty Lt. Jonathan Bohm shot Damian Orozco, 49, at the Yacht Haven Park & Marina Resort. Orozco later died at a hospital, and Bohm was placed on administrative leave with pay pending the investigation, according to police.
CBS Miami reported that Police Chief Bill Schultz said a suspect in another Fort Lauderdale disturbance-call shooting was pronounced dead at the hospital after officers opened fire when he allegedly fired at them. Reporting from multiple outlets says officers involved in such shootings are commonly placed on paid administrative leave while investigators review the incident.
Emergency response details tied specifically to 1408 NW 9th Ave have not been confirmed in the available reports, and no verified road closures, evacuations or traffic impacts were found for that address. Some unrelated Fort Lauderdale shooting reports mentioned brief traffic diversions during police activity.
Dispatch records show 70 similar officer-involved shooting incidents in Fort Lauderdale over the past six months.
FDLE is leading the investigation, according to reporting, and officials have not yet released a case-specific update for the 1408 NW 9th Ave call. Additional details are expected as investigators review body camera video and witness statements.
