Fort Lauderdale Condominium Fire: What We Know So Far
A fire at the Ocean Summit condominium in Fort Lauderdale left one person dead and at least one other resident injured, according to local news reports and officials. Here is what we know so far.
According to the Miami Herald, WSVN and Local 10 News, the fire was reported around 1 a.m. at 4010 Galt Ocean Drive. A Fort Lauderdale fire official said the victim was in his 90s, and the resident taken to Broward Health was in his 50s.
Officials said the fire was contained to a unit on the ninth floor and was extinguished before it spread further. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue said the ninth and 10th floors were evacuated during the response, and police said the incident is being handled as a death investigation.
Police said the victim’s name will not be released until next of kin are notified. Officials also said investigators are still working to determine what caused the fire and whether it was accidental.
The response involved Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue and Fort Lauderdale police, indicating a scene that required both fire suppression and a death investigation. The evacuation of two upper floors suggests crews were focused on clearing nearby residents while containing the fire to a single unit.
Dispatch records show a structure fire was also logged at this address on June 11, along with other incidents on May 22 and a fall injury on May 12.
What happens next will depend on the fire investigation and the medical examiner process. Officials have not publicly identified the victim or released a cause.
Day.News will continue to update this story as officials release more information.
