Fort Lauderdale Condo Fire: What We Know So Far
A fire at the Ocean Summit condominium on Galt Ocean Drive left one person dead and another hospitalized, and investigators have now said the blaze was accidental, according to local news reports.
According to WSVN, the victim was a 93-year-old man, and his longtime roommate was taken to Broward Health for treatment. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue said the man who died was in his 90s and the other resident was in his 50s, while police said the victim’s name will not be released until family notification is complete.
Local 10 reported the fire appeared to have started in the living room of a ninth-floor apartment and was ruled accidental. Firefighters put out the blaze before it spread beyond the unit where it started, according to the Miami Herald and Local 10.
Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue evacuated the ninth and 10th floors of the building during the response, according to WSVN. No suspect information has been reported in the available coverage.
Dispatch records show prior incidents at this address, including a separate structure fire on June 11, a reported other call on May 22 and a fall injury on May 12.
