Fort Lauderdale Condo Fire: What We Know So Far
A fire at the Ocean Summit condominium on Galt Ocean Drive killed one resident and injured another, and investigators are now working to determine how the blaze started, according to multiple reports.
Fort Lauderdale police said the victim’s name will not be released until family notification is complete, according to the Miami Herald. Battalion Chief Stephen Gollan said the person who died was in his 90s and the hospitalized resident was in his 50s, according to WSVN.
Reporting from the scene said the fire was contained to a unit on the ninth floor and did not spread to other apartments, according to the Miami Herald and Local 10. Local 10 also reported that police later said the blaze was ruled accidental.
Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue evacuated the ninth and 10th floors during the response, according to WSVN. The agency’s actions indicate firefighters were concerned about smoke or fire spread beyond the original unit and were clearing nearby residents while crews worked the scene.
Dispatch records show a prior structure fire was logged at the same address on June 11, along with other incidents on May 22 and May 12, including a fall injury.
What happens next will depend on the police death investigation and fire investigation, which were both underway as of the latest reports. Officials are expected to release more information once next-of-kin notifications are complete and investigators finish their review.
Day.News will continue to update this story as officials release more information.
