Fort Lauderdale Apartment Blaze: What We Know So Far
A fire in a Fort Lauderdale apartment building burned through part of the roof, but residents evacuated safely and no injuries were reported, according to local coverage. Here is what we know so far.
Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue said the fire started in a storage unit, though the cause remains under investigation, according to CBS News Miami and NBC Miami. Officials said the damage was confined to a common area and the roof above it, with little, if any, damage reported in the units.
NBC Miami reported that the fire damaged the elevator shaft and the roof above it, but no residences were damaged. Fire officials also said residents were allowed to return to their units after the fire was extinguished, adding that “Residents should be able to sleep in their own beds tonight.”
The response appears to have been large enough to quickly contain the flames and prevent injuries, based on the reports from CBS News Miami and NBC Miami. The fact that the fire remained limited to a common area and roof space suggests crews were able to isolate the blaze before it spread into occupied units.
Dispatch records show 859 similar structure fire incidents in Fort Lauderdale in the past six months, underscoring how frequently fire crews are called to building fires in the city.
The cause is still under investigation, and officials have not reported any suspect information. Additional updates are expected as Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue continues its inquiry.
Day.News will continue to update this story as officials release more information.
