Former Virginia Assistant Principal Faces Trial in School Shooting Case
Newport News, Virginia – A trial began this week for a former assistant principal accused of negligence, stemming from a 2023 school shooting. The case centers on allegations that the administrator disregarded warnings indicating a student had brought a loaded firearm to Richneck Elementary School.
The defendant, a former assistant principal, is facing scrutiny over actions taken, or not taken, prior to the incident. Prosecutors are expected to argue that the administrator had specific knowledge of the potential danger and failed to act reasonably to prevent it.
The shooting occurred in January 2023 when a 6-year-old student shot his first-grade teacher, Abigail Zwerner, in her classroom. Zwerner sustained serious injuries but survived. The student obtained the handgun from his home.
The trial is expected to include testimony from school staff, law enforcement officials, and possibly the injured teacher. The focus will likely be on what information the assistant principal possessed concerning the student and the alleged weapon, and how that information was handled.
The outcome of this trial could set a precedent for accountability in school safety protocols and the responsibilities of school administrators in preventing gun violence.
