KYIV, Ukraine — General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukraine's former top military commander, stated Russia's capacity for large-scale ground offensives has been significantly reduced, according to his first interview since his dismissal. Syrskyi, speaking to the BBC, indicated that despite this, Ukraine anticipates ongoing aerial assaults from Russia.
Syrskyi, who previously led Ukrainian ground forces and oversaw the defense of Kyiv in early 2022, outlined a strategy for Ukraine that emphasizes technological superiority and sustained Western military aid. He acknowledged the challenges Ukraine faces in terms of manpower and resources, particularly regarding ammunition supplies.
He stated Russia's military has sustained substantial losses in personnel and equipment since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. Syrskyi noted that these losses have impacted Russia's ability to conduct broad ground operations, shifting their tactics towards missile and drone attacks.
Ukraine's defense approach, as described by Syrskyi, involves leveraging advanced weaponry and intelligence from its allies to counter Russian forces. He emphasized the importance of developing and deploying new technologies on the battlefield to gain a strategic advantage. He also highlighted the need for consistent and timely delivery of Western military assistance, including artillery shells and air defense systems.
Syrskyi discussed the evolution of the conflict, noting the shift from large-scale maneuver warfare to more localized engagements and long-range strikes. He indicated that Ukraine continues to adapt its defensive and offensive operations to these changing dynamics.
His remarks provide a perspective on the current state of the conflict and Ukraine's strategic outlook as the war continues into its third year.
