National Desk
April 17, 2026
**Why it matters locally:** While this national sports headline might seem distant, Alabamians, particularly those with an interest in soccer or those who follow Auburn University athletics, might find this story tangentially interesting. Mauricio Pochettino was previously among the candidates considered for the Auburn head coaching position at one point. His potential move to Real Madrid could affect the USMNT, and indirectly impact soccer development programs across the US, which includes youth and amateur leagues in Alabama. If the USMNT changes leadership it can have rippling effects on youth programs here that sometimes have to scramble.

Mauricio Pochettino, the current manager of the USMNT, is reportedly on Real Madrid's shortlist to replace their current manager, Alvaro Arbeloa, according to RMC Sport.
Pochettino is currently preparing to lead the U.S. national team in the upcoming World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. His contract with the USMNT is set to expire at the conclusion of the tournament.
