Ford's $500M Sterling Heights Expansion to Add 1,200 MI Jobs
STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (Day.News) — Ford Motor Company announced a $500 million expansion of its Macomb Assembly Plant in Sterling Heights on Monday, targeting production of the next-generation F-150 truck and creating 1,200 jobs in southeast Michigan. The facility, a key hub for Ford's F-Series lineup — America's best-selling vehicle for decades — will upgrade assembly lines for enhanced efficiency and future models. The news, first reported by FOX 2 Detroit, comes as Ford doubles down on its Michigan roots in Macomb County, home to 275,000 residents and a stronghold of UAW Local 699 workers.
Company executives emphasized the project's focus on innovation, including advanced manufacturing for hybrid and electrified F-150 variants. 'This investment secures high-skilled jobs and keeps Ford competitive in the evolving auto industry,' said Ford spokesperson Jessica Hanson in a statement. The expansion builds on $1.5 billion invested in the plant since 2019, when it shifted to F-150 production from previous models like the Ram trucks it once built for Stellantis. Construction is slated to begin in summer 2026, with full operations by late 2027.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer praised the move as vital economic relief for the region. 'Ford's commitment reinforces Michigan as the auto capital, supporting families in Sterling Heights and beyond,' Whitmer said during a virtual press event. Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel noted the jobs — averaging $65,000 annually with benefits — will inject millions into local economies from Warren to Clinton Township. The announcement aligns with federal incentives from the CHIPS Act and Inflation Reduction Act, aiding domestic supply chains strained by global chip shortages.
