Florida unveils infrastructure plan directing new funds to roads, ports and coastal resilience

Staff Writer
June 10, 2026

Florida leaders have announced a new infrastructure investment plan that directs additional state funding to highway expansions, seaport improvements and coastal resilience projects designed to protect against flooding and sea-level rise.

The plan aims to support long-term economic growth while strengthening the state's defenses against increasingly severe storms and tidal flooding, according to state officials.

The infrastructure initiative focuses resources on three primary areas: expanding highway capacity, upgrading seaport facilities, and implementing projects to mitigate the effects of rising seas and storm-related flooding. The coastal resilience component represents a significant commitment to addressing vulnerabilities that have become more pressing as Florida faces stronger hurricanes and persistent flooding in low-lying areas.

State officials said the investment plan is intended to position Florida's infrastructure to accommodate continued population and economic growth while simultaneously addressing environmental challenges that threaten coastal communities and critical transportation networks.

The announcement comes as Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed more than 100 bills into law this year, marking an active legislative period for the Republican governor and state lawmakers. Recent measures signed by DeSantis include legislation substantially increasing the homestead property tax exemption beginning in 2027 and 2028.

Florida has also implemented major policy changes in recent weeks, including tightening SNAP eligibility requirements scheduled to take effect in 2026, which will reshape access to nutritional assistance for low-income residents across the state.

On other fronts, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody has escalated scrutiny of online platforms, issuing criminal subpoenas to Roblox over allegations the gaming platform fails to adequately protect children from predators. The investigation represents a high-profile examination of child safety measures on popular technology platforms.

Local governments have also been active on policy matters. Winter Park has advanced ordinances limiting protests at public facilities including libraries and event centers, reflecting broader debates over public speech, civility and use of public spaces.

The infrastructure plan's emphasis on coastal resilience aligns with growing recognition that Florida's extensive coastline and low elevation make it particularly vulnerable to climate-related impacts. The state has experienced several devastating hurricanes in recent years, causing billions of dollars in damage and highlighting the need for enhanced protective measures.

Details on the total funding levels and specific project timelines were not immediately available.
