Florida officials announce crackdown on organized retail theft with tougher penalties, expanded task forces

Lawmakers approved legislation to substantially increase the homestead property tax exemption, with the changes set to take effect in 2027 and 2028. The state also moved forward with tightened eligibility rules for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, scheduled to begin in 2026.

Local governments have simultaneously pursued their own public safety and regulatory measures. Winter Park recently advanced ordinances limiting protests at public facilities including libraries and event centers, reflecting ongoing debates over public speech and the use of civic spaces.

The organized retail theft initiative targets crimes that law enforcement officials say have become more coordinated and widespread. Catalytic converter thefts, which involve stealing exhaust system components containing valuable metals, have emerged as a particular concern for authorities.

State officials said the enhanced data sharing provisions would allow agencies to identify patterns and connections between crimes occurring in different jurisdictions, potentially breaking up organized operations that span multiple counties or regions.
