Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced a package of public safety initiatives Tuesday aimed at combating violent crime and drug trafficking, with new measures that would increase penalties for fentanyl offenses and provide additional funding for law enforcement agencies across the state.

The initiatives include enhanced penalties for fentanyl trafficking, expanded funding for state and local law enforcement, and new enforcement tools designed to address organized retail theft, according to the governor's office.

The administration said the measures are intended to deter violent crime and reduce drug overdoses in Florida. However, civil liberties advocates have raised concerns about the potential impact of increased sentencing requirements.

The public safety announcement comes as DeSantis has signed more than 100 pieces of legislation this year, state officials said. The flurry of lawmaking has touched on issues ranging from property taxes to public assistance programs.

Among the major legislative actions this year, lawmakers approved legislation to substantially increase the homestead property tax exemption, with the changes set to take effect in 2027 and 2028. The state has also moved forward with tighter eligibility rules for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program that will take effect in 2026, reshaping access to safety-net programs for low-income residents.

Florida officials have also intensified focus on child safety issues. Attorney General Ashley Moody recently issued criminal subpoenas to the gaming platform Roblox over allegations the company has not adequately protected children from predators on its platform, escalating a high-profile investigation into tech companies' safety practices.

The public safety initiatives represent the latest in a series of law enforcement-focused policies from the Republican governor. Details about specific penalty increases for fentanyl trafficking and the amount of additional law enforcement funding were not immediately available.

Local governments have also been active on public safety and public order issues. Winter Park recently advanced ordinances that would limit protests at public facilities including libraries and event centers, reflecting ongoing debates over free speech and the use of public spaces.
