Florida expands school voucher program, alters public education funding formula

Staff Writer
June 10, 2026

Florida has enacted a new education law that broadens eligibility for the state's universal school voucher program and modifies how state funds are distributed between public and private schools, a change that has sparked debate over the future of district budgets.

The legislation expands access to Florida's voucher system, which allows parents to use public funds for private school tuition and other educational expenses. The law also adjusts the funding formula that determines how state dollars flow to public school districts versus private school options.

Public school advocates have raised concerns that the changes will place additional financial pressure on district budgets. The shift in the funding formula means public schools may receive a smaller share of state education dollars as more families access private school options through the expanded voucher program.

Supporters of the legislation argue it enhances parental choice in education and creates greater competition within the school system. The expanded eligibility is expected to allow more Florida families to participate in the voucher program regardless of income level.

The education measure is part of a broad legislative push in Florida this year. Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed well over 100 bills into law during the current session, according to state officials.

Other major legislation approved this year includes a measure to substantially increase the homestead property tax exemption beginning in 2027 and 2028. The state has also tightened eligibility rules for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, changes scheduled to take effect in 2026 that will reshape access to the safety-net program for low-income residents.

Beyond education and tax policy, Florida has pursued initiatives on multiple fronts in recent weeks. The state attorney general has issued criminal subpoenas to Roblox, the online gaming platform, over allegations it has failed to adequately protect children from predators on its service. The investigation represents an escalation in the state's scrutiny of technology companies' child safety practices.

Local governments have also been active on policy matters. Winter Park recently advanced ordinances designed to limit protests at public facilities including libraries and event centers, reflecting broader tensions over public demonstrations and the use of civic spaces.

The new education law continues Florida's expansion of school choice programs under the DeSantis administration, which has made voucher programs and alternatives to traditional public education a priority in recent years.
