Finger Lakes Wine Country Pours On Growth With Expanded Trail Network

National Desk
May 2, 2026
The Finger Lakes has solidified its status as a world-class wine region following its designation as Wine Enthusiast's 2025 American Wine Region of the Year, a honor reflecting decades of innovation dating back to Charles Fournier and Dr. Konstantin Frank, whose breakthroughs in Vitis vinifera cultivation transformed American viticulture. Today, the region encompasses more than 140 wineries operating across Canandaigua, Cayuga, Keuka, and Seneca lakes, attracting visitors through expanded wine trail experiences that showcase the region's terroir and hospitality. The Finger Lakes Wine Alliance and regional tourism councils have launched coordinated initiatives to deepen visitor engagement beyond traditional tastings. The Keuka Lake Wine Trail has reimagined its digital tasting passport platform to drive year-round visitation, while the Finger Lakes Regional Tourism Council introduced new trail guides designed to direct visitors to less-traveled destinations. These efforts build on America's oldest wine trail on Cayuga Lake, established years ago and now part of a broader network connecting visitors to the region's diverse portfolio of wineries, breweries, cideries, and distilleries. The promotional push extends across the Rochester-to-Ontario County corridor and into parts of Livingston and Wayne counties, where over 35 craft beverage establishments participate in regional trail programs. Daily tastings, tours, and trail-wide events featuring local cuisine and seasonal themes have become standard offerings, creating economic momentum for hospitality businesses, restaurants, and lodging providers throughout the region. The Finger Lakes Tourism Alliance continues to lead efforts elevating the region's global visibility while anchoring its appeal to regional identity and local employment.
