Green's Light is No More
Residents of historic Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island will notice a change at the intersection of South 14th Street and Lime Street, as the traffic signal known locally as "Green's Light" has been permanently removed. The light, which has regulated traffic flow at this busy crossing for decades, was taken down yesterday, April 15, 2026, by city crews.
The removal comes after a recent traffic study commissioned by the City of Fernandina Beach Public Works Department determined the signal was no longer necessary for safe and efficient traffic management at the location. The study cited changes in traffic patterns and the effectiveness of nearby signals as key factors in the decision.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution when approaching the intersection and to be aware of the new traffic configuration. Drivers should treat the intersection as an uncontrolled crossing, yielding to traffic already in the intersection and following all standard right-of-way rules. The city has placed temporary signage to alert drivers to the change, and additional traffic control measures, such as new stop signs or a four-way stop, are under consideration based on ongoing observation of traffic flow.
Further updates regarding any permanent changes to the intersection's traffic control will be announced by the City of Fernandina Beach.
