Fernandina Beach City Commission Approves New Downtown Lighting Project
FERNANDINA BEACH, FL – April 15, 2026 – The Fernandina Beach City Commission voted unanimously last night to approve a new downtown lighting project aimed at enhancing safety and aesthetics along Centre Street, the heart of the historic district, and surrounding areas. The decision, made during their regular meeting at City Hall on Ash Street, greenlights the installation of new, energy-efficient LED streetlights.
The project, which has been a topic of discussion for several months, will replace outdated fixtures with modern lighting designed to improve visibility for pedestrians and drivers, particularly during evening hours. City Manager Dale Martin noted that the new lighting will also contribute to the historic charm of downtown Fernandina Beach while reducing energy consumption and maintenance costs for the city.
Funding for the project, estimated at approximately $350,000, will come from the city's capital improvement budget. Installation is expected to begin in late summer, with completion anticipated before the end of the year. Residents can anticipate minimal disruption during the installation phase, with most work scheduled during off-peak hours.
