Federal Grand Jury in Alabama Indicts Southern Poverty Law Center on Fraud Charges
National Desk
April 22, 2026
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche announced the indictment against the Southern Poverty Law Center in a Tuesday press conference, marking a significant federal action against one of the nation's most prominent civil rights organizations. The 11-count indictment includes six counts of wire fraud, four counts of bank fraud, and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, all brought by the Justice Department in Alabama's Middle District.[1][2]
According to the indictment, between 2014 and 2023, the SPLC paid at least $3 million to at least eight individuals affiliated with extremist groups including the Ku Klux Klan, United Klans of America, and the National Socialist Movement.[1][2] Federal investigators allege the organization used these payments ostensibly to gather intelligence on violent far-right organizations, but prosecutors contend the arrangement constituted fraud against donors who contributed funds believing their money would dismantle racism.
The Justice Department alleges the SPLC deliberately concealed the source of these payments through a scheme involving shell companies and sham bank accounts. According to Director Patel's statement during the announcement, money was transferred through multiple accounts and then loaded onto prepaid cards distributed to extremist group members, designed to shield the actual source of funds.[2] Investigators further allege the organization deceived financial institutions by establishing fictitious entities to disguise that the money originated from the SPLC.
The SPLC's interim CEO Bryan Fair acknowledged the indictment's focus on the organization's use of paid confidential informants to gather intelligence on violent groups, though he stopped short of addressing the fraud allegations directly.[2] The investigation remains ongoing, according to federal authorities who announced the charges.
