Federal Appeals Court Revives Challenge to Missouri Congressional Map

A federal appeals court on Monday directed a lower court to revisit a challenge against Missouri's new congressional map. The Eighth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued an order to a three-judge panel, instructing them to reconsider their previous ruling that upheld the map. This action follows a request from a group of voters who contested the map's legality.

Missouri's Republican-controlled Legislature approved the new district boundaries in 2022. Republicans currently hold six of Missouri's eight U.S. House seats. The adopted map drew legal challenges, with opponents arguing it favored Republicans.

The three-judge panel had previously dismissed the legal challenge in December. The panel determined the voters did not demonstrate sufficient evidence of an unconstitutional partisan gerrymander. The appeals court's new order requires this panel to reassess its decision.

Missouri’s next primary election is scheduled for August 6, 2024. The general election will take place in November 2024. The state must finalize its congressional districts before these elections.
