Ernest Kish, Longtime Lakeland Resident, Passes Away

Lakeland mourns the passing of Ernest Kish, a beloved and familiar face in our community for many decades. Mr. Kish, 88, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at his home on Elm Street, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in 1937, Ernest moved to Lakeland with his family as a young boy and quickly became an integral part of the town's fabric. He was a proud graduate of Lakeland High School, Class of 1955, where he excelled in baseball and was known for his quick wit and friendly demeanor. After serving two years in the United States Army, Ernest returned to Lakeland to raise his family and contribute to the community he cherished.

For over 40 years, Ernest was a dedicated employee at Lakeland Mills, starting on the factory floor and eventually retiring as a supervisor. His colleagues remember him as a fair and hardworking man who always had a kind word and a helping hand for those around him. Beyond his professional life, Ernest was deeply involved in local organizations. He was a long-standing member of the Lakeland Lions Club, serving as president for two terms, and was instrumental in organizing their annual pancake breakfast fundraiser held at Munn Park for many years. He also volunteered countless hours at the Lakeland Public Library, assisting with their popular summer reading programs.

Ernest was a familiar sight at local sporting events, cheering on the Lakeland Leopards from the stands at historic Bryant Stadium, and was a regular at the weekly poker game at the Lakeland Senior Center. His presence will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Margaret Kish; his daughter, Susan (David) Miller of Lakeland; his son, Robert (Jennifer) Kish of Willow Creek; and four grandchildren, Emily, Michael, Sarah, and Daniel. He is also survived by his sister, Helen (Thomas) Johnson of Lakeland, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Lakeland on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at 11:00 AM. Friends and family are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Ernest's memory to the Lakeland Public Library or the Lakeland Lions Club.
