Ernest Kish, Longtime Lakeland Resident, Passes Away
Lakeland mourns the passing of Ernest Kish, a beloved and familiar face in our lakeside community for many decades. Mr. Kish, 88, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 7, 2026, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Born in 1937, Ernest moved to Lakeland with his family in the early 1950s and quickly became an integral part of the town's fabric. He was a proud graduate of Lakeland High School, Class of 1955, where he excelled in both academics and athletics, particularly on the football field. After serving his country in the United States Army, Ernest returned to Lakeland to raise his family and contribute to the community he cherished.
For over 30 years, Ernest was a dedicated employee at the Lakeland Mill, where he was known for his strong work ethic and camaraderie with his colleagues. Following his retirement, he remained active, often seen tending to his immaculate garden on Elm Street or enjoying a cup of coffee and conversation at the downtown Lakeland Diner, where he was a regular fixture.
Ernest was a devoted member of St. Jude's Catholic Church, volunteering countless hours for various church initiatives and always lending a hand wherever needed. He was also a passionate supporter of Lakeland's youth sports programs, rarely missing a game, especially when his grandchildren were playing. His quiet generosity and unwavering support for local causes touched many lives.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Kish; his children, Susan (David) Miller and Thomas (Jennifer) Kish; and his five grandchildren, Emily, Michael, Sarah, Daniel, and Olivia. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and a community that will deeply miss his kind spirit and warm smile.
A funeral service will be held at St. Jude's Catholic Church on Friday, April 11, 2026, at 10:00 AM, followed by interment at Lakeland Community Cemetery. Visitation will take place at Henderson Funeral Home on Thursday, April 10, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Ernest's memory to the Lakeland Public Library or St. Jude's Catholic Church.
