E-bike, E-scooter Battery Fires Linked to Fatalities, Injuries

NEW YORK — Fires originating from the lithium-ion batteries of e-bikes and e-scooters have caused 18 deaths and nearly 700 injuries, according to data from the New York City Fire Department. The department has documented incidents where individuals died from inhaling toxic fumes or became trapped inside burning residences.

Fire officials attribute these fires to several factors, including faulty batteries, improper charging practices, and unregulated aftermarket modifications. These incidents have raised concerns among urban planners and public safety advocates regarding the widespread adoption of micromobility devices.
