Duke University Launches $50M NC Climate Science Push
National Desk
April 25, 2026
Duke University announced Thursday a transformative $50 million grant from The Duke Endowment to bolster science faculty and research, with a sharp focus on climate change impacts in North Carolina.[5][7] The funding will accelerate hiring of more than a dozen junior- to senior-level faculty in science, medicine, technology, engineering and mathematics over the next three years, prioritizing areas like climate change that threaten the state's coastal communities.[5] This builds on Duke's growing portfolio of environmental efforts, including a separate $4.5 million award for the Climate and Health Research Initiative (CHeRI), which targets health risks from climate shifts in North Carolina and South Carolina.[1][2][3]
CHeRI unites Duke University School of Medicine, Duke Global Health Institute, Nicholas School of the Environment and Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability to deliver interdisciplinary research, community engagement and data-driven strategies.[1][2] Led by contacts like Erin Hanlin, MD, MPH, and Grayson Chappell, MA, LPA, the four-year initiative identifies vulnerable groups in local communities, such as those in flood-prone areas like Wilmington and the Outer Banks, and fosters a statewide coalition for climate resilience through policy, education and practice.[2][3] It emphasizes translating findings into practical solutions amid rising threats like sea-level rise and intensified storms battering North Carolina's 3,000-mile coastline.
Complementing these efforts, Duke's broader $50 million science push aligns with North Carolina's urgent needs, where climate-driven epidemics and ecosystem shifts endanger public health and economies reliant on tourism and fishing.[5] The grant supports strategic recruitment to address institutional priorities, enabling Duke to lead in preparing students and communities for a warming world. Meanwhile, a distinct $50 million FDA award to Duke and UNC establishes the Research Triangle Center of Excellence in Regulatory Science and Innovation, involving NC State and NC Central students in public health research.[4] These investments cement the Research Triangle's role as a national hub for climate innovation tailored to the Tar Heel State.
