Driver Arrested in Fatal Oakland Park Hit-and-Run

National Desk
May 10, 2026
OAKLAND PARK, FL — Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit detectives arrested 22-year-old Khaleel Carey following a fatal hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of Donna Ramsey, according to a BSO press release. The incident unfolded at approximately 12:19 a.m. on Wednesday, April 8, in the 4400 block of Northwest Ninth Avenue, near West Prospect Road. Carey, driving a 2016 Nissan Maxima northbound, struck Ramsey who was crossing outside a designated crosswalk before fleeing the scene. Investigators identified the vehicle and driver through forensic evidence and surveillance, leading to Carey's swift apprehension, BSO reported. He faces charges of tampering with or fabricating physical evidence and failure to stop or remain at the scene of an accident involving death. The case remains under investigation by BSO Traffic Homicide Detective Shelby Campbell. This arrest highlights ongoing traffic safety issues in Oakland Park, a busy corridor for commuters traveling between Broward and Palm Beach counties. Local residents near Northwest Ninth Avenue, a key route linking to Oakland Park Boulevard and I-95, have voiced concerns over pedestrian safety amid increased nighttime traffic. The incident aligns with broader Florida trends of urban public safety challenges, including recent spikes in violent crime and high-profile crashes like the Orlando nightclub shooting. As the state reports a robust unemployment rate of 2.8% and infrastructure advances such as the I-4 Ultimate project nearing completion, BSO urges vigilance on roads. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Detective Campbell at 954-321-4840 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS for possible rewards up to $5,000. Oakland Park officials have not issued specific statements, but BSO's ongoing efforts underscore commitments to roadway accountability amid Florida's recovery from storms and economic growth.
