DHS Identifies 185 Non-Citizens on Nevada Voter Rolls

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) identified 185 non-citizens on Nevada's voter registration lists. This figure emerged after the agency transmitted data to Nevada election officials. Federal officials had previously cited data from a 2019 report by the Census Bureau as a basis for higher estimates regarding non-citizen voter registrations. This report, focusing on voting and registration in the 2018 election, did not specifically investigate voter fraud. It included a question about whether respondents were citizens and whether they voted.

Nevada's Deputy Secretary of State for Elections, Mark Wlaschin, discussed the DHS findings. He said the state is taking steps to address the identified registrations. Wlaschin indicated that officials would contact these individuals. They will ask them to verify their citizenship status. Wlaschin noted that if individuals cannot prove citizenship, the state will remove them from the voter rolls.

Previous statements from government officials, including former President Donald Trump, suggested a larger number of non-citizens on Nevada's voter rolls. In a social media post on June 10, Mr. Trump stated that DHS provided Nevada with a list of 'over 10,000 non-citizens that are on their voter rolls.' He claimed that 'these are people that cannot vote, but they are on the rolls.' DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, however, informed the state in a June 7 letter that the actual number was 185.

Election integrity advocates and voting rights organizations have commented on the discrepancy. These groups emphasize the importance of accurate voter roll maintenance. They also highlight the potential for misinformation regarding voter eligibility. The 2019 Census Bureau report, which some officials previously referenced, collected self-reported data. It did not directly confirm voter fraud. Respondents indicated their citizenship status and whether they voted in the 2018 election.
