Dengying Formation: A Geological Mystery Not Local to Jacksonville

Staff Writer
April 15, 2026

While geological formations are often fascinating, the "Dengying Formation" is a significant geological unit found primarily in the Yangtze Platform of South China. This formation, known for its rich fossil record and importance in understanding early animal evolution, does not have any direct presence or relevance to the Jacksonville area. Our local geology is characterized by younger, Cenozoic era sediments, distinct from the ancient Proterozoic rocks of the Dengying Formation.

Jacksonville residents interested in local geological features might instead explore the unique characteristics of the St. Johns River basin, which meanders through neighborhoods like Riverside, or the coastal plain sediments that define our region, evident along the shores of Jacksonville Beach. These local formations play a crucial role in our aquifer systems and natural landscapes.
