WASHINGTON – Democratic Party organizations and several activist groups have outlined their preparations for the upcoming midterm elections. These groups are planning responses should certain election results be contested or if issues arise with ballot counting and certification processes. Democracy Forward, a non-profit organization, has developed a legal resource. This resource includes a 140-page memorandum, distributed to government officials and advocacy groups, outlining potential legal actions related to election administration. Skye Perryman, President and CEO of Democracy Forward, stated, “We aim to ensure that our legal system is prepared to address challenges that may arise during and after the election.” The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has established an election protection program. This program has recruited over 50,000 lawyers and volunteers across all 50 states. These individuals will monitor polling places and provide assistance on election day. Rachael Sweet, National Election Protection Director for the DNC, said the program focuses on "ensuring that every eligible voter can cast their ballot and that election administrators can carry out their duties." Sweet also stated that the DNC has developed communications strategies. These strategies involve presenting information to the public regarding election procedures and results. She added that they have worked with state and local parties on these communication efforts. The States United Democracy Center, a nonpartisan organization, has focused on preparing state election officials. Joanna Lydgate, CEO of the States United Democracy Center, noted that the organization has conducted training sessions with officials. These sessions cover legal frameworks and procedures for managing election-related disputes. Lydgate stated, “We provide resources to election officials so they can fulfill their responsibilities under the law.” Other groups, such as the End Citizens United/Let America Vote Action Fund, have created their own response frameworks. Tiffany Muller, President of the End Citizens United/Let America Vote Action Fund, explained that their plan involves engaging with voters and advocating for adherence to election laws. Muller said, “Our efforts aim to inform the public about the processes involved in elections.” These organizations have indicated they will monitor election-related activities and address any deviations from established procedures. Their strategies include public communications, legal support, and direct engagement with election administrators and voters.
