Deadly North Philly Barrage: 24+ Shots Kill One, Wound Another
National Desk
April 16, 2026
Philadelphia police responded to the intersection of Howard Street and Lehigh Avenue in the Fairhill section of North Philadelphia around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, discovering over two dozen fired shell casings scattered across the scene, along with blood trails leading down the street and into an alleyway.[1] Minutes later, a 26-year-old man arrived at Temple University Hospital, having been shot seven times; he survived his injuries.[1] Meanwhile, 29-year-old Joseph Marte was rushed to Temple University Hospital's Episcopal Campus with a gunshot wound to the head and pronounced dead just before 10 p.m.[1]
The brazen attack underscores persistent public safety challenges in Fairhill, a North Philadelphia neighborhood long plagued by gun violence amid poverty and limited resources. Philadelphia has seen a stubborn rise in shootings, with police reporting hundreds of incidents in the city so far this year, though exact 2026 figures remain preliminary. Investigators have not disclosed a motive, and no arrests have been made as detectives comb surveillance footage and canvass witnesses.[1]
This double shooting adds to a string of deadly incidents gripping the city, heightening calls from community leaders for intervention. Fairhill residents, no strangers to such violence, expressed outrage over the volume of gunfire in a residential area. Police urge anyone with information to contact the Homicide Unit at 215-686-3334 or use the PPD tip line at 215-686-TIPS (8477).[1]
