DC Mayor Bowser, MPD Launch Data-Driven Patrols to Boost Safety
National Desk

Washington, DC -- Mayor Muriel Bowser and Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith announced the Focused Patrol and Community Engagement Policing Strategy on Thursday, targeting high-traffic residential areas in each of the city's seven police districts. The data-driven approach identifies small geographical zones most impacted by crime, tasking patrol officers with foot patrols, business and building checks, traffic enforcement, and community collaboration to address quality-of-life issues and prevent violence.[1][2][4]
Unlike past summer crime initiatives that shifted officers citywide, this program keeps district-assigned MPD members in their beats, encouraging them to exit cruisers for intentional engagement. Officers will report concerns to 311, track impacts, and participate in regular briefings for adjustments, aiming to increase patrol visibility, optimize personnel for radio responses, and diffuse crime benefits without displacement.[2][4] A separate Community Focused Patrol Unit, deployed on mountain bikes and scooters under the Office of the Executive Assistant Chief, supplements efforts in areas with elevated violent crime or emerging trends, using 14-day crime data comparisons.[3]
The strategy builds on MPD's 2024 successes, including a 35% drop in violent crime, 32% homicide reduction, and 39% fewer robberies, driven by Operation THRIVE, Robbery Suppression Initiative, Real Time Crime Center, and drone programs.[7] Ward 5 Council member Kenyan McDuffie has advocated similar community-focused investments to cut overtime and boost morale.[8] Officials evaluate the patrols continuously, promising sustained presence in neighborhoods from Anacostia to Columbia Heights.
