Davie Tanker Fire: What We Know So Far
A tanker fire on westbound I-595 in Davie injured people, shut down the area and sent multiple agencies racing to the scene, according to news reports and police alerts. Here is what we know so far.
According to WPTV, one person was taken to the hospital after a fuel tanker collided with a public bus on westbound I-595 near Flamingo Road. WSVN reported that the tanker driver suffered minor burns and was expected to be okay. Patch said both the tanker and the bus caught fire.
Davie police posted that "THE WHOLE AREA IS SHUTDOWN DUE TO A TANKER FIRE" and urged drivers to avoid westbound I-595 and State Road 84 between Pine Island Road and Southwest 136th Avenue. WSVN reported the fire created traffic backups in both directions while firefighters worked, and the road reopened after crews knocked down the flames.
The cause of the tanker fire was not immediately known, and the Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash circumstances, according to the information provided. CBS Miami also reported that the separate Davie tanker fire forced all westbound lanes to close.
Emergency response included hazmat support and mutual aid from multiple agencies, according to the city of Weston and Patch. That level of response suggests officials were treating the incident as a significant roadside fire with potential fuel and hazardous-material concerns.
Dispatch records show prior incidents at this address, including a vehicle fire on June 9 and other calls on June 3. In the area, Davie has also seen other major fire emergencies, including a junkyard fire at the U Pull It salvage yard that burned at least 200 compacted cars, according to Battalion Chief Andrew Popick.
Officials have not yet released a full cause, and more details on injuries and the crash sequence are still expected. Day.News will continue to update this story as officials release more information.
