Davie Tanker Fire on I-595: What We Know So Far
A tanker fire on westbound I-595 in Davie prompted a major emergency response and shut down traffic in the area, and early reports say the driver may have died at the scene. Here is what we know so far.
Davie police said, "THE WHOLE AREA IS SHUTDOWN DUE TO A TANKER FIRE," according to a social media post cited in local reporting. CBS Miami reported that firefighters and police were called to the scene about 10 a.m. in the westbound lanes east of 136th Avenue, while Davie Fire Marshal Robert Taylor said the highway was closed in both directions as hazardous materials units responded.
Officials warned drivers to avoid westbound I-595 and State Road 84 between Pine Island Road and Southwest 136th Avenue, according to Davie police and local media reports. Weston also said in a social media post that the tanker collided with a bus and both vehicles caught fire, according to local reporting.
Local coverage says hazmat response units were involved, underscoring the scale of the incident and the concern about possible fuel or other dangerous materials at the scene. One report said the driver died at the scene, while another said people were injured, though no confirmed injury count was provided. CBS Miami reported the cause was still unclear in early coverage.
Dispatch records show this stretch of Davie has seen prior incidents, including a vehicle fire on June 9 and two other calls on June 3.[dispatch records]
What happens next is an official cause determination and any additional word from Davie fire officials, police or state transportation authorities as cleanup continues and the investigation develops. One report said the highway reopened after the blaze was extinguished, though closures lasted for hours in at least one account.
