Dangerous Lake Michigan Conditions Expected: Avoid Beaches and Piers

Residents and visitors in Lake County, IL, are advised to remain out of Lake Michigan waters and avoid shoreline structures due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Chicago IL. The statement is effective immediately, beginning Wednesday, September 23, at 9:46 PM CDT, and will continue until Thursday, September 24, at 12:00 PM CDT.

High wave action and dangerous currents are expected at Lake Michigan beaches, with waves forecast to reach 3 to 5 feet. These conditions will create life-threatening swimming hazards, particularly for inexperienced swimmers.

To ensure personal safety, the NWS strongly recommends staying out of the water. Furthermore, the public is urged not to venture out onto piers, jetties, breakwalls, or other shoreline structures, as these areas can become extremely dangerous during high wave events.
