Dangerous Lake Michigan Conditions: Avoid Beaches and Piers Through Wednesday

Residents and visitors in Lake, Northern Cook, and Central Cook Counties are advised to remain out of Lake Michigan waters and avoid shoreline structures due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Chicago, IL. The statement is effective immediately, from September 21 at 10:04 PM CDT, and will remain in effect until Wednesday, September 23 at 7:00 PM CDT.

The NWS reports that high wave action and dangerous currents are expected, with waves anticipated to reach 4 to 7 feet. These conditions create life-threatening swimming hazards, particularly for inexperienced swimmers.

Authorities urge the public to remain out of the water to avoid these dangerous swimming conditions. Furthermore, individuals should not venture out onto piers, jetties, breakwalls, or any other shoreline structures during this period.
