Crimson Tide's Sweet 16 Streak: Alabama Eyes Chicago Showdown
National Desk
April 22, 2026
The Alabama Crimson Tide continued their dominant tournament run Sunday night with a 25-point victory over No. 5 seed Texas Tech—the largest margin of victory in school NCAA Tournament history. The win in Lubbock, Texas, sends Alabama to the Sweet 16 for the fourth straight tournament appearance, a streak that underscores the program's consistent excellence under head coach Nate Oats.
Labaron Philon Jr. has been the engine driving Alabama's tournament success. The junior guard scored a game-high 29 points in Friday's first-round victory over 13th-seeded Hofstra, including 21 in the second half to help seal a 90-70 win at Benchmark International Arena in Tampa. Two days later against Texas Tech, Philon showcased his all-around game with nine points, a career-high 12 assists, and six rebounds.
Alabama's balanced attack has been impossible to defend. In the Hofstra game, five Crimson Tide players scored in double figures, including Aiden Sherrell's double-double of 15 points and 15 rebounds, and Taylor Bol Bowen's efficient 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting. The Tide's 24-9 record through the first round reflects a season-long commitment to high-scoring, versatile basketball that has made them a 4-seed capable of challenging anyone in the tournament.
Next Friday, Alabama will face the tournament's top seed, Michigan, at the United Center in Chicago. The matchup represents another chance for the Crimson Tide to build on their historic tournament pedigree. Alabama has reached the Sweet 16 twelve times in school history, the Elite Eight three times, and made their first—and only—Final Four appearance in 2024, when they fell to eventual national champion UConn.
