Snohomish County Expands Everett Rail Yard for Waste
Snohomish County broke ground today on a $4.43 million expansion of its Everett Intermodal Facility, adding a new rail spur, paved container storage area, and stormwater upgrades to boost the 15.77-acre yard's capacity by nearly 25 percent.
The county processes 665,000 tons of garbage annually through transfer stations in Everett, Mountlake Terrace, and Arlington, then hauls it to the intermodal facility. Regional Disposal Company, which operates the leased site, loads the waste onto trains bound for the company's landfill in Roosevelt, Washington.
"Managing the county's garbage becomes more challenging every year as our communities grow," said Snohomish County Solid Waste Director David Schonhard. "These improvements allow us to keep pace with demand and move waste efficiently."
Today marks the first phase of a multi-year project. Future phases include pavement improvements, additional storage, and realignment of the main rail line. The county has not announced a timeline for the remaining work.
