Cooper City Deputy Shooting: What We Know So Far

May 31, 2026

A Broward County deputy-involved shooting in Cooper City left one man dead and sent two others, including the deputy and the man's mother, to the hospital, according to Broward Sheriff’s Office and local news reports. Officials said this is what we know so far.

According to BSO spokesperson Claudinne Caro, deputies responded after a call reporting that a man had shot himself and needed help. Caro said the deputy approached the man to render aid, and the man then attacked the deputy, leading the deputy to fire his weapon. Caro said it remained unclear how the man was attacking the deputy.

BSO said Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue personnel began lifesaving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said the deputy and the man's mother were taken to the hospital with unknown injuries, but neither was injured by gunfire. FDLE was also on scene and had taken over the investigation, according to the reports.

The incident was reported near the 10200 block of Griffin Road in Cooper City, near a McDonald’s parking lot, according to CBS News Miami, WSVN and NBC Miami. The City of Cooper City also publicly confirmed that BSO was investigating a deputy-involved shooting in that area.

The response included Broward Sheriff’s Office units, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, indicating an active homicide-level law-enforcement investigation and medical response. One report said the deputy was placed on administrative assignment under BSO policy.

Dispatch records show this was the city’s only similar officer-involved shooting in the past six months. Officials have not released additional details about the deputy’s condition, the man's identity or what led up to the attack.

The investigation remains open, and more updates are expected as BSO and FDLE release additional information.

Day.News will continue to update this story as officials release more information.
