Concerns Raised Over Counterfeit Prescription Drugs Purchased Online

National Desk
April 23, 2026

Why it matters locally: Pennsylvania residents should be aware of the risks associated with purchasing prescription drugs online, as counterfeit medications can contain harmful substances, potentially leading to serious health consequences. Pennsylvanians are advised to only purchase prescription medications from licensed pharmacies.

Health experts are cautioning consumers about the potential risks associated with purchasing prescription medications from online pharmacies, citing concerns about counterfeit drugs and unregulated sources. These concerns stem from the possibility that medications purchased online are not genuine. Counterfeit drugs may contain incorrect dosages of the active pharmaceutical ingredient, or they might include completely different, potentially harmful substances. This can lead to ineffective treatment or adverse health consequences for patients. "The primary concern is the lack of oversight and quality control in these unregulated pharmacies," said Dr. Emily Carter, a pharmacologist at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). "Consumers may unknowingly be putting their health at risk by ingesting medications that have not been properly manufactured or tested." The risks are further compounded by the difficulty in identifying legitimate online pharmacies from fraudulent ones. Many counterfeit drug operations mimic established pharmacies' websites to defraud consumers. Features that indicate an illegitimate pharmacy include offering prescription drugs without a valid prescription, extremely low prices that seem too good to be true, and lack of verification processes. Consumers are generally advised to only purchase prescription drugs from licensed pharmacies that require a valid prescription and are located within a regulated jurisdiction. Checking with a doctor or pharmacist about reputable online pharmacies can also help to ensure medication safety.
