Columbus Breaks Ground on $500M Convention Center Expansion

National Desk
May 4, 2026
COLUMBUS, Ohio (Day.News) — Groundbreaking ceremonies marked the start of a $500 million expansion at the Greater Columbus Convention Center on May 4, 2026, with city leaders, state officials and Experience Columbus executives in attendance. The project, first announced in 2023, aims to add 200,000 square feet of exhibit space, 50 new meeting rooms and a 60,000-square-foot ballroom, addressing chronic space shortages that have turned away major events. 'This expansion will unlock economic potential for Downtown Columbus and beyond,' said Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther at the event. Funded through a public-private partnership including $250 million in city bonds, $100 million from Franklin County and $150 million from private bonds backed by hotel taxes, the five-year build is managed by Turner Construction Co. Expected completion in 2031, it will boost the center's total footprint to over 1 million square feet. The convention center, which generated $1.2 billion in economic impact in 2025 per Experience Columbus data, hosts 900+ events annually, drawing 1.5 million visitors. Proponents highlight job creation — 4,000 construction positions and 1,200 permanent roles — amid Ohio's tourism rebound post-pandemic. 'Central Ohio's convention business grew 15% last year; this positions us to capture national events like those lost to larger venues in Indianapolis,' noted Kerri Behrens, vice president of Experience Columbus. Local hotels like the Hilton Downtown and Renaissance Columbus, within blocks, anticipate occupancy spikes, sustaining 25,000 tourism jobs in Franklin County. Challenges include navigating supply chain delays and labor shortages, but project backers cite Ohio's $2.5 billion infrastructure investments under Gov. Mike DeWine as supportive. The expansion aligns with Columbus' 2026 aspirations as host city for NCAA events and tech summits, reinforcing its rivalry with Cleveland and Cincinnati for convention supremacy.
