Colorado Law Addresses Electric Vehicle Battery Recycling Costs
Recycling some electric vehicle batteries presently incurs costs exceeding the value of their recovered materials. This financial discrepancy creates several challenges for individuals and businesses involved in the process. A new law in Colorado targets these specific issues.
Chris McQuiggen and Archie Brewton, from Everett Auto Parts, prepared two Chevy Volt batteries for shipment. They secured the batteries to a pallet, using a layer of wood to prevent contact between the units. Everett Auto Parts identified a recycling facility willing to accept these hybrid vehicle batteries.
However, the salvage yard does not expect to generate revenue from their recycling. The current economics dictate that the cost of processing outweighs any potential financial return for these specific batteries. This situation exemplifies the broader financial considerations within EV battery recycling.
