CMP's $150M Grid Push Powers Maine's Renewable Future
AUGUSTA, Maine — Central Maine Power (CMP), Maine's largest utility, has committed $150 million over five years to bolster the state's electric grid, prioritizing renewable energy integration and resilience. Filed with the Maine Public Utilities Commission on Sept. 16, 2025, as the 'Investing in Maine’s Future Plan,' the proposal targets grid strengthening for hundreds of thousands of customers, including hiring 400 new full-time employees like 200 lineworkers. CMP President and CEO Joe Purington emphasized the plan's focus on 'enhancing reliability' and providing 'financial stability' amid rising clean energy demands.
In Cumberland and York Counties, CMP plans 21st-century substations and high-capacity lines benefiting 200,000 customers from Cumberland to Old Orchard Beach and Greater Portland. The Greater Portland Transmission Upgrades Project will replace aging equipment, expand capacity for growing demand, and boost reliability. These efforts build on prior investments, like the 2016 $5.4 million South China Substation in Kennebec and Waldo Counties serving China, Palermo, Windsor, Liberty, Freedom, and Vassalboro — part of a $40 million annual grid spend that year.
The upgrades align with Maine's clean energy push, echoing CMP's past proposals for hydro, wind, and solar transmission, such as the New England Clean Energy Connect (NECEC) aiming for 1,200 MW from Hydro-Québec by 2022, potentially saving Massachusetts $150 million yearly while cutting 1.4 million metric tons of carbon emissions. Recent federal support bolsters this, with a $147 million DOE grant announced by Gov. Janet Mills, Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King, and Rep. Chellie Pingree for a pioneering multi-day energy storage project in Lincoln — the world's largest to date, enhancing renewable delivery. Additional $6.6 million in state grants fund utility resilience projects statewide.
