Cincinnati Officials End Measles Outbreak After Vaccinating 500+ Residents

National Desk
May 4, 2026
Cincinnati Health Department officials announced the resolution of a measles outbreak on April 30, 2026, after administering more than 500 MMR vaccines to at-risk residents in the city's urban core. The outbreak, which began in early March with cases linked to an unvaccinated international traveler, infected 12 individuals, primarily in Hamilton County neighborhoods like Over-the-Rhine and West End. No hospitalizations or deaths were reported, thanks to proactive contact tracing and pop-up clinics at City of Cincinnati Primary Care centers.[1] Health Commissioner Dr. Alix Carter praised community partners, including WCPO 9 News for initial reporting and local churches that hosted vaccination events. "We vaccinated over 500 people in just six weeks, focusing on unvaccinated children under 5 and adults over 20, the groups most vulnerable to complications like pneumonia and encephalitis," Carter said. The drive targeted areas with vaccination rates below the 95% herd immunity threshold, boosting coverage in zip codes 45202 and 45214.[1] This localized success contrasts with national trends, where the CDC reported 1,792 confirmed measles cases as of April 24, 2026, including 22 new outbreaks—93% outbreak-associated. Ohio has seen scattered cases this year, but Cincinnati's containment prevented escalation amid rising U.S. incidents, the highest since measles was declared eliminated in 2000.[2] Measles, spread through airborne droplets, remains a threat despite the effective MMR vaccine recommended in two doses starting at 12-15 months. Cincinnati officials urge residents to verify immunity via (513) 357-7320 appointments, emphasizing prevention as the only defense against the virus that can infect 90% of non-immune close contacts.[1]
