Choosing a Healthier Sunscreen: What Santa Rosa Beach Residents Need to Know

Staff Writer
April 9, 2026

As Santa Rosa Beach residents enjoy the beautiful spring weather and prepare for warmer months, the importance of sun protection is a perennial topic. While sunscreen is a crucial tool in preventing sun damage, not all sunscreens are created equal, and understanding the differences can help locals make healthier choices for themselves and the environment.

Many traditional chemical sunscreens contain active ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate. These chemicals have raised concerns among health and environmental advocates. Studies have suggested potential impacts on coral reefs, leading some coastal communities to ban their sale. While no such ban is currently in place in Santa Rosa Beach or Walton County, awareness of these issues is growing.

For those seeking alternatives, mineral sunscreens offer a different approach. These products typically use zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as their active ingredients. Instead of absorbing UV rays like chemical sunscreens, mineral sunscreens create a physical barrier on the skin that reflects the sun's harmful rays. They are generally considered 'reef-safe' and are often recommended for individuals with sensitive skin.

When selecting a sunscreen, residents should look for broad-spectrum protection, meaning it guards against both UVA and UVB rays. An SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 30 or higher is also recommended for effective protection during extended periods outdoors, whether fishing in the Gulf, strolling along Scenic Highway 30A, or enjoying a day at Grayton Beach State Park.

Beyond the type of sunscreen, proper application is key. Sunscreen should be applied generously at least 15-30 minutes before sun exposure and reapplied every two hours, or more frequently after swimming or sweating. Combining sunscreen use with other protective measures, such as seeking shade during peak sun hours (10 AM to 4 PM), wearing wide-brimmed hats, and donning UV-protective clothing, provides the most comprehensive defense against sun damage.

Making informed choices about sunscreen can contribute to both personal health and the preservation of Santa Rosa Beach's precious natural environment, including its coastal dune lakes and white sand beaches.
