Chinese Robotics Companies Expand Presence in UK Retail Sector
British retailers are implementing automation technologies from Chinese robotics manufacturers to improve operational efficiency and address labor market conditions. This trend involves the integration of robotic systems into various aspects of retail logistics, including warehouses and distribution centers.
Several Chinese robotics companies have established a presence in the UK market. Geek+, for example, a Beijing-based firm, installed 1,000 robots at a new British distribution center. This facility handles products for multiple brands, including Nike. Geek+ has also equipped sites for clients such as Decathlon and The Very Group in the UK.
Quicktron, another Shanghai-based robotics company, has supplied warehouse automation for UK-based third-party logistics provider Wincanton. Wincanton uses Quicktron robots at its warehouse in Northamptonshire, which serves supermarket chain Waitrose.
Data from the International Federation of Robotics indicates a global increase in robotic installations. The organization reported a 31% rise in new robot installations worldwide in 2021 compared to the previous year. China accounts for approximately 52% of all industrial robot installations globally, according to the IFR. Manufacturers in China deployed 290,258 robots in 2021.
Luke Vardy, a managing director at Wincanton, stated that his company employs automation to alleviate labor shortages and improve working conditions. He noted that robots handle repetitive tasks, freeing human workers for more complex roles. Wincanton also aims to enhance its carbon footprint by reducing unnecessary transport through automation.
Retailers in the UK face ongoing challenges related to workforce availability. The Office for National Statistics reported 980,000 job vacancies in the UK between November 2023 and January 2024. The retail sector recorded 120,000 job vacancies during that period.
UK manufacturing and logistics firms have also reported difficulties in recruiting and retaining staff. The British Retail Consortium reported 102,000 job vacancies in the retail sector in the third quarter of 2023. This figure represents a slight decrease from the 112,000 vacancies reported in the second quarter of 2023. These numbers highlight the persistent demand for workers in the industry.
Retailers cite labor costs as a significant operational expense, representing 10% of overall operational costs for 80% of retailers, according to a survey by the British Retail Consortium. Additionally, 75% of retailers identified business rates as a top cost. These factors contribute to the industry's consideration of automated solutions.
