Chargers Unveil Vision for SoFi Stadium Expansion in Inglewood
INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday shared conceptual renderings of a proposed expansion to SoFi Stadium, their shared home with the Rams at Hollywood Park, envisioning enhanced fan amenities and a adjacent convention center to host more state-wide events. Located in Inglewood just off the I-405 freeway, the 3.1 million-square-foot venue -- already the NFL's largest and first indoor-outdoor stadium -- could see significant upgrades to draw conventions, concerts and tournaments beyond Chargers and Rams games. The designs, created in collaboration with architects, depict a seamless integration of sports and entertainment spaces, though final plans depend on approval from the Joint Powers Authority and Inglewood voters.
This push comes as the Chargers solidify their Southern California roots, fresh off a ceremonial groundbreaking for their new 14-acre headquarters in nearby El Segundo last year. Owner Dean Spanos called the $276 million facility -- set to open in 2024 with three full-size fields, training rooms, a rooftop club and esports studio -- a declaration of permanence, just 7 miles from SoFi. The expansions align with Hollywood Park's growth into a 300-acre destination under Rams owner E. Stanley Kroenke, already a $5 billion anchor for Los Angeles sports.
Inglewood officials view the project as an economic boon, building on SoFi's success hosting Super Bowl LVI, WrestleMania and college football playoffs. Past Chargers stadium efforts, like abandoned San Diego proposals costing up to $1.1 billion, underscore the stakes after the team's 2017 relocation from Qualcomm Stadium. No timeline or cost figures were released for the expansion, but it promises to elevate California's event landscape if greenlit.
