CDC Updates HPV Vaccine Recommendation to Two Doses for Younger Adolescents

National Desk
May 1, 2026
Atlanta, GA – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced a revised recommendation for the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. According to the CDC, adolescents aged 11 to 12 should now receive two doses of the vaccine, administered at least six months apart. This updates the previous recommendation of a three-dose series for this age group. The HPV vaccine protects against cancers caused by human papillomavirus infections. The CDC indicates the two-dose schedule is effective in providing sufficient protection when initiated during early adolescence. A three-dose schedule is still recommended for individuals who begin the vaccination series at age 15 or older, and for those with certain immunocompromising conditions. Those individuals should still receive three doses following the previously-instituted vaccination schedule. The CDC anticipates the change may improve vaccination rates by simplifying the series for younger adolescents. Additional information regarding the revised recommendations are available on the CDC's website.
