CDC Estimates Millions Affected by Foodborne Illnesses Annually

Atlanta, GA – Approximately 48 million people in the United States contract illnesses from contaminated food annually, according to new data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC report, published recently, details the extent of foodborne diseases and their impact on the nation's health.
The government agency estimates that among those affected by foodborne illnesses, roughly 128,000 require hospitalization each year. Furthermore, the CDC reports that approximately 3,000 deaths annually are attributed to these diseases.
Foodborne illnesses, often referred to as food poisoning, can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites that contaminate food. Symptoms can range from mild gastrointestinal discomfort to severe and life-threatening conditions.
