Cavaliers Defeat Pistons 117-113 in Overtime, Lead Series 3-2
The Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Detroit Pistons 117-113 in overtime during Game 5. The Cavaliers now lead the second-round series 3-2, with Game 6 scheduled in Cleveland. A controversial non-call at the end of regulation preceded the overtime period.
The Cleveland Cavaliers secured a 117-113 overtime victory against the Detroit Pistons in Game 5 on Wednesday, May 13, at Little Caesars Arena. Cleveland now holds a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven second-round series, with Game 6 set to take place in Cleveland.
Regulation concluded with the score tied at 103. Pistons forward Ausar Thompson blocked a shot from Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell with approximately two seconds remaining. Thompson then pursued the loose ball, at which point he made contact with Cavaliers center Jarrett Allen. Officials did not call a foul on the play, sending the game into overtime.
Crew chief referee Tony Brothers addressed the non-call after the game. Brothers stated that during live play, both players went for the ball, and incidental contact occurred between their legs without either player possessing the ball. The league office will review the play and include it in the Last Two Minute Report.
Thompson had previously converted two free throws in the fourth quarter. The Pistons gave up the final nine points of regulation and the first four points of the overtime period. Detroit must win Game 6 to extend their season. The Pistons have a 3-0 record in elimination games this postseason. The Cavaliers maintain a 6-0 home record in this year's playoffs, including wins over Detroit in Games 3 and 4.
