Mason Triana, 27, died during the standoff that erupted shortly before 7 a.m. Thursday when Miami police responded to a ShotSpotter gunfire alert near Northwest 15th Avenue and 26th Street in the Allapattah neighborhood. According to Miami Police Chief Manny Morales, the suspect fired a high-caliber rifle at officers before being found dead inside a home after SWAT members surrounded the residence. Authorities have not disclosed whether Triana died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound or return fire from officers. Two Miami police officers were shot during the encounter and are recovering from their injuries.
Alan Triana was initially brought in as a witness but is now facing multiple charges stemming from his alleged role in the incident. Jail records show he was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center Thursday evening around 6 p.m. and faces counts of harassing a witness in a capital felony case, tampering with evidence, possession of armor-piercing ammunition, improper exhibition of a firearm, and resisting an officer without violence. His bond was set at $2,500 for each of the lesser charges, while the most serious count remains pending a bond hearing.
During a search warrant execution at the residence Thursday night around 11:30 p.m., police discovered multiple weapons including an AR-style pistol loaded with green tip armor-piercing ammunition. The arrest affidavit indicates Alan Triana refused to cooperate with police during their investigation. The incident marks another violent confrontation in Miami-Dade County as the region grapples with ongoing public safety concerns that local officials and residents continue to address.
